MAKE THE NUMBERS USEFUL

Expected risk cost calculator

For each distinct event, enter your estimated probability and its additional cost if it happens. Enter zero for unused events. These are your assumptions; no probabilities or cost impacts are supplied.

How the calculation works

Expected additional cost = sum of (each entered probability ÷ 100 × its additional cost impact). The total is rounded once to the nearest penny.

Use the result with care

An expected value is not the amount a particular project will spend and does not specify an adequate contingency or confidence level. Keep impacts distinct so the same cost is not counted twice. This does not model event interactions, cost distributions, schedules or changing conditions. A low-probability event can still have a large actual impact.
