Sanders

Match the sanding action, abrasive and dust control to the finish you want.

Sanding can mean removing material, levelling a surface or preparing a finish. The right machine depends on which of those jobs comes first. A more aggressive sander is not automatically the better choice, especially around thin veneers, edges and detailed surfaces.

UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS

Know the main types.

01

Random orbital sanders

A common general-purpose option for suitable flat surfaces, using round abrasive discs and a combined sanding motion.

02

Detail and sheet sanders

Different pad shapes help with corners or larger flat areas. Check the abrasive format and how the paper attaches.

03

Belt sanders

Use a moving abrasive belt for more assertive material removal. They suit a different brief from fine finishing or small detail work.

BEFORE YOU BUY

Make a short
buying brief.

Keep these checks beside you when comparing models, kits and retailer listings.

  • Identify the surface and whether the job is removal or finishing.
  • Check abrasive availability, attachment and dust-hole layout.
  • Consider the extraction connection and suitable collection equipment.
  • Look at handling and access along edges and into corners.
SAVE YOURSELF THE GUESSWORK

Easy mistakes
to avoid.

  1. Starting with an abrasive that is too coarse for the surface.
  2. Treating dust collection as a substitute for assessing the material.
  3. Sanding an unknown old coating before checking what it might contain.
